Congratulations to biomedical engineering majors Ashley Carney and Tawfik Hussein, who are eligible for the Barry M. Goldwater scholarship! This is the most prestigious national scholarship for undergraduates in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering, awarded to only 300 undergraduates annually across the United States who plan to pursue careers in those fields. Out of the students who are vying for the award, Texas A&M University will choose up to four nominees who will be competing for the scholarship at the national level.
Ashley is a first-semester undergraduate in the BMEL Undergraduate Research Program. She works on the Lymphatic Biomechanics project, concentrating on culture of lymphatic cells for use in experiments applying stress and strain in vitro.
Tawfik completed a semester in the BMEL-UGRP and is now conducting research through the University Research Scholars program. He is also working on the Lymphatic Biomechanics project, working on preparing cultured cells for shear stress studies in engineered microchannels.
Goldwater Scholars and Honorable Mentions will be announced in March.
